This innovative project is now underway in partnership with Samriddha Pahad (SP), Nepal. SP has set up some remote banking cooperatives in Taplejung, training and involving local villagers.
Our project is being developed and managed by a team of Yamphudin villagers initially supported by SP, and the Chair is a Female Community Health Volunteer. The Yamphudin cooperative has an extra financial package. Rapid loans can be made from this to women for maternity emergencies, for example paying for transport to the District Hospital. Any local mother will be helped, regardless of whether she has a cooperative account and the poorest will be excused from paying back.
If this pilot is successful, the scheme will be expanded to other target villages.
