Why Stand Behind Our Work

Together with our partners we have made tangible differences to the lives of the people in the Kangchenjunga region

Our Education programme has transformed school attendances and we have provided teachers with the skills, knowledge and resources they need to help children learn and grow. Our child centred teacher training programme is helping to create a new generation of literate and numerate children from poor families in remote mountainous areas in Nepal. In addition, we have rebuilt or renovated school buildings and classrooms across the region which have transformed the learning environment for children and teachers.

A dedicated Health programme started in 2013. Our needs assessments revealed extremely poor health knowledge and behaviours by villagers and very poor access to health services. Our programme has empowered remote communities to be healthier and achieve better well-being with one of the main achievements a zero maternity death rate.

Don’t just take our word for it

When the world was at its most isolated, these mountaineers didn’t forget Nepal’s mountain communities. Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Kenton Cool, Ben Fogle, the late Jan Morris and Sir Chris Bonington are people who understand what it means to persevere in extreme conditions, and they’re telling you that the work Hillary started is still vital.

When the world paused, Nepal’s mountain communities didn’t stop needing help. Neither did these mountaineers stop believing in our work.

There is plenty more work to be done in our current Health and Education programmes and with your help we can do even more to help the mountain people of Nepal. Life is hard for the mountain people.

We aim to offer help where we can in the Kangchenjunga region. All of our projects are requested by the mountain people who do much of the work themselves, and are thus efficiently run. We are experienced as a Trust. We have a network of contacts developed over decades, and yet continuously look to improve how we manage and monitor our work.

We welcome your gift of any amount. Money stretches a very long way in the Himalaya and even a modest donation can change a life.

Building on Hillary’s Legacy – Family of Himalayan Trusts Vital to Nepal 10 Years After the 2015 Earthquake

Sir Edmund Hillary, alongside Tenzing Norgay, made history in 1953 by reaching the summit of Mount Everest as part of a British expedition. Yet, he considered his greatest achievement to be what came after—his lifelong commitment to building schools and medical clinics in the foothills of Nepal. His philanthropic legacy continues through the Himalayan charities...

From Silence to Smiles: Transforming Classrooms in Nepal

During our last field visit in November, as we trekked between schools, Rajendra Pant—REED Nepal’s dedicated field coordinator—reminded us of the remarkable transformation we’ve helped bring to the region. Having worked in these schools since 2010, Rajendra has seen first-hand how much has changed. The most significant shifts? A new approach to teaching, greater parental...

The benefits of libraries in schools

As a trustee with the role of improving teaching, learning and resources in 35 schools, it is always rewarding when you can witness an immediate impact. A little while ago the provision of lunch boxes ensured children did not go hungry, stayed in school and focused on their learning for the whole of each day....

Making a difference to Lelep’s Hostel

Saraswati Chyaribuk Secondary School in Lelep ward has always fallen short of being a beacon of excellence, partly because new classrooms have taken too long to construct and because the facilities at the girls’ hostel were in dire need of repair and improvement.
